Things to do in Greystoke and the Surrounding Area

The Boot and Shoe Inn, a family owned and run ancient coaching inn is situated at the centre of Greystoke a quiet picturesque village on the very fringe of the Lake District National Park. Over looking the village green with it’s ancient market cross dating back to the early 1600’s that is surrounded by beautiful stone houses and cottages some with cobbled forecourts [pretty gardens].

Greystoke is steeped in history; Greystoke Castle, still a family home and 14 generations of the Howard family have lived there thus far. The Plague Stone still lies in the field by St. Andrews Church. Greystoke is also famous as the ancestral home of Tarzan, Lord Greystoke, myth or legend?

The more modern amenities in the village are post office and village shop, swimming pool, playing field, school and the famous racing stables of Nicky Richards. Ideally located for anyone wanting to visit the lakes and fells of Cumbria, and all those many people who cycle the C2C every year.

Beckstones Art Gallery

Established in the 1970s, Beckstones Art Gallery has earned a well deserved reputation as the Lake District’s foremost gallery exhibiting the highest quality original paintings by a hand-picked selection of some of the finest contemporary artists in the United Kingdom with more than 300 paintings available in a variety of styles, subjects and media.

Family owned and run by sisters Niki and Karen, Beckstones is located in an idyllic hamlet on the edge of the Lake District National Park near the village of Greystoke and within very easy reach of the M6, A66, Keswick and Penrith. Open all year round the diverse range of paintings from 50 artists is changing all the time and is complemented by biannual one man exhibitions by Tim Gustard, Peter Symonds, Alan Thompson and Andrew Talbot.

Amazing art and a friendly, knowledgeable approach has made Beckstones very much a destination art gallery with people travelling from far and wide to see the incredible work on display.

Rookin House Activity Centre

Rookin House is an established adventure venue and has been offering a wide variety of outdoor activities for over 25 years. Family owned and operated, Rookin House has a strong focus on both fun and safety. The centre is just 4 miles from Ullswater, and 8 miles from both Keswick and Penrith and easily accessible from the A66. All of the activities (unless otherwise stated) are based on one site with Blencathra providing a spectacular Lakeland backdrop.

We are the only activity centre in the Lake District National Park who offer such a wide variety of activities from Horse Riding to Quad Biking to Human Bowling and the Madtrax All Terrain Vehicles. There are a few companies that offer a booking service but they don’t actually run the activities themselves.

By booking direct you are sure to get the best price available. We offer extremely good value for money without compromising on quality. With the activities being based on site we can save on set up costs and this is passed on to you our customers.
